Thousand Days Civil War
(1897 - 1899)

Persecution against radical sectors opposing the government of that time led to a Civil War known as the War of the Thousand Days. The war is followed by a period of brutal repression against the union movement and indigenous people that extended into the 1920’s. This war consolidated the bipartisan system between the two existing political parties: Liberals and Conservatives.
